The Old Grain Elevator | Charlottesville Child Photographer

My mom has been telling me I need to photograph my boys at this old grain elevator in my home town for a while now. It was one of those things where I just couldn’t envision exactly how I was going to use it so I kept putting it off. That and my trips home usually are so jam packed full of other things that there is rarely time to take my kids on a shoot.

Just after Christmas, I decided I was going to drive to Indiana and surprise my mom with the kids. We hadn’t been able to make it out there and I wasn’t planning to be out there until at least the end of January. But some times I get wild hairs. And that involves driving 9+ hours to surprise people. I would say my mom was sufficiently surprised!

Since this was a decide a 6pm that you are leaving in the morning at 5am kind of trip, I didn’t have any plans. That actually turned out to be a good thing as I came down with the stomach flu or something within 12 hours of being there and laid dying on her couch for two days. The best thing about being sick with family? They can take care of your kids! Seriously, it was like the best sick experience I’ve had in years.

After I recovered, Mom and I took the kids down to the elevator. I still didn’t really know how I was going to use it so I just sort of let them play and do whatever they wanted to. My mom made them laugh and there was lots of pretending to be Wall-E and they had fun. It was pretty darn chilly out there so we didn’t stay long but I think these pictures capture my boys perfectly as they are right now.
